Applied mechanics is a fundamental subject of engineering science which underpins all of the primary engineering disciplines including mechanical, aerospace, automotive, civil and materials. It also addresses a broad range of areas from conventional structural and mechanical design, through to cutting-edge computational mechanics and more.
The National Committee of Applied Mechanics (NCAM) is part of the Mechanical College Board. It exists to promote and advance the science and practice of applied mechanics.
NCAM’s objectives are to:
- Develop and deliver high quality continuing professional development for industry and academic members, including technical sessions and seminars.
- Contribute to engineering education and curriculum development. This includes providing substantial applied mechanics content and support to Engineers Australia’s accreditation process.
- Deliver learned society conferences in specific areas of focus.
- Encourage and foster development and innovation in emerging technical areas.
- Maintain a national focus on education, research and engagement that incorporates applied mechanics or allied disciplines.
- Develop cooperation with allied national and international societies.
- Actively engage across industry and academia.

The Australian Congress on Applied Mechanics (ACAM) is held every two to three years. It’s a forum for practitioners of the various fields of applied mechanics to meet and present developments and learn the latest in other fields.
ACAM also showcases the current trends and research developments in applied mechanics across the Australasian region and its relationship to national and regional priorities.
